Mphande Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Mphande name comes from a kind of bead that looks like a prism. The first clan bearers of the name were among the group of people called Chewa that moved from the Congo Region to what is now called Malawi. The whole group (the Chewa) first settled in what is now Nkhata-Bay West in Chief Kabunduli's area in Malawi. When the first dispersion happened, the largest group moved to Mankhamba - somewhere between what are now the districts of Mangochi, Dedza and Salima. However, one family clan moved to the south of what is now the urban village of Mzuzu. In this area, they found the indigenous growing bead that looked like a prism which they called Mphande to distinguish it from the other types of beads simply called mikanda (beads). Mphandes became their trade items which earned this clan their name, Mphande.
