User-submitted Reference

The origin of the surname Muddiman began with Guy Mort-de-Main (French for 'death by hand'), who was a Captain in the army of William the Conqueror, thus making him of Norman extraction (Viking/French). He acquitted himself well in the Battle of Hastings, Sussex, England, in 1066, and was awarded a manor house by King William. The family settled around Winchester, Hampshire, England, and their exploits can be read in the Annals of Winchester Cathedral. Over the centuries, the name was 'anglicized' from Mort-de-Main to Muddiman and its variants.(as Braggins derives from Braganza) The insignia of Muddiman is a mailed fist, and a raven's head.
