Mukomazi (omukomazi) is a Luganda word (and noun) derived from the verb, okukomaga, which means 'backcloth making'. Hence the name meaning 'maker of Backcloth'.
Backcloth making is a traditional cloth-design, and been most popular among the Ganda (Baganda) people of Central Uganda for centuries. The cloth, Backcloth (olubugo) is made from a back of tree. The process, from harvesting the tree-bark to turning it into a piece of cloth is called okukomaga and the person who does it is called 'omukomazi'.
