Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

1. A Lancashire corruption from Molineux, Molyneux. 2. From mull, a Scottish word for a cape or headland; from Gael. maol, 3. For Moll, a nickname for Mary; also a surname. Mol however was a name of Ethelwold, king of Northumbria, and Mull was the brother of Caedwalha, king of Wessex; and Kemble says the name must be mule, a half-breed, and suggests that his mother may have been a British princess.
