Mulleary Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Woulfe equates this with Ó Maolmhuire of Clogher, Co. Tyrone, adding that it is changed to Myles in Mayo. Mullery and Mulry, however, are mainly found in the Connacht counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Galway where Mulry is listed in the “census” of 1659 as one of the principal Irish names in the south of Co. Roscommon. Co. Galway is missing from that document. Mulry is synonymous with the more numerous Mulroy, q.v. The Christian name Maolmhuire is anglicized Myles, and this has also occurred with the surname, though the use of Myles and Mullery as synonyms is not frequent. The Fiants of the sixteenth century contain many somewhat similar names with the prefix Mac; e.g. MacMelery, MacMelmory, MacMulmory, MacMolmoree, MacMoylmurry etc. etc., but these relate to parts of the country remote from the Mullery homeland. From the same source we learn that Gilchrist O'Moylery was one of the men who followed Rory O'Donnell to Mayo in 1603, but to decide what Gaelic surname this represents would not be possible in the absence of further evidence.
