MULTRAR: A multurer was one who ground or had grain ground at a particular mill, (2) tacksman of a mill. The office was a very unpopular one in the Middle Ages. Adam Multerer and Henry Multerer were burgesses of Edinburgh, 1344 (Egidii, p. 4), and John Multrer, bailie in 1360 (ER., II, p. 28). Robert Multrere or Muterer had charter of lands in barony of Lastalryk (Restalrig), 1365 (RMS., I, 200). Johannes Multrar was one of the inquest on the marches of Kyrknes and Louchor, 1395 (RPSA., p. 3). Michael Multrer was chaplain of Cohnonell, Ayrshire, 1415 (Ayr, p. 9), James Multrar or Multrare was burgess of Arne, 1450 (ibid., p. 26, 28), and Adam Multrar was burgess of Irvine, 1500 (Simon, 9). Mathow Multrar in Irvine was charged with defrauding the king's customs, 1524 (Irvine, I, p. 35). A charter by John Multrare of Markinch, Fife, is recorded in 1555 (Pitfirrane, 129). John Multrare of Seyfield is recorded in 1514. Richard Multrare was sheriff of Kinross, 1548 (Gaw, 40).
