From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of NF. origin. From Norman de Magneville, De Mandeville, Latin de Magnavilla, "of the great town," a place in Normandy. The de Mandevilles, earls of Essex, were originally de Magneville. Gilbert Mandewel was juror on an inquest held at Traqueyr, 1274 (Bain, II, 34). John de Mundeville of Wigtownshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal shows a figure of a bishop holding a cross, stars and scallop-shells on either side, S' Iohannls de Mondeville cl'ici (ibid., p. 214,534). Sir Henry de Mundeville also rendered homage in 1296, and as Sir Henry de Mundewyl was juror on an inquest on the lands of Lady la Zuche in Wigtownshire in the same year (ibid., p. 215). Roger de Mandeville was a competitor for the crown of Scotland in 1291 (Dunbar, Scottish kings, 1899, p. 84). Henry de Mundeville made a gift of three acres of his territory of Glengelt to the Abbey of Dryburgh (Dryburgh, 186), and in 1297 was invited by Edward I to go on an expedition to Flanders (Bain, II, p. 232; Documents illustrative of the history of Scotland, II, p. 169) Henry Monwyl witnessed a charter by Nicholas de Drunfres, burgess of the same town, 1394 (SCM., V, p. 251). Robert I gave Fergus de Monda Willa half of the lands of Stranrever in the sheriffdom of Wigtoun (RMS., I, App II, 610). Master Simon of Mundeville or Simon Mundevill (without 'of') had safe conducts into England in 1407-8 (Bain, IV, 728,761). Henry Mundwell was burgess of Wigtown, 1498, John Mundville was notary there in 1610, Robert Mundell was tenant in the barony of Mousewall, 1673 (PSAS., XXIII, p. 74), and James Mundell was examined for the Test in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 433). Mundells are still numerous in Dumfriesshire. Mondevyl 1304, Munduail I486.
