Simon Moneday, Huntingdonshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Simon Mundi, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Henry Mundi, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Edmund Moneday, Somerset, Edward III: Kirby's Quest.
(a) Local, 'of Mondaye.' A correspondent writes: 'Mondaye, a hill in the parish of Juaye, about six miles from Bayeaux, is still extant, likewise the abbey... The hill was originally called Mont d'Afi...' It is highly probable that Monday is in some cases local, but I have not any early instances to bring forward in evidence.
1584. Married — Thomas Gibbyns and Agnes Munday: St. James, Clerkenwell.
1657. — Richard Chase and Bridgett Monday: St. Michael, Cornhill.
V. Monday.
(English) Descendant of Monday, a name given to children in the Middle Ages born on a Monday; variants of Monday, q.v.
A town and a parish in Buckinghamshire, and a township in Herefordshire.
From the day of the week. See Times and Seasons.
Probably from the day of the week. The Mundys of Marheaton, co. Derby, who trace their pedigree to temp. Edward I., have a tradition of Norman descent, from a place called the abbey of Mondaye. The Itin. de la Normandie, however, shews no place so designated.
Local. Derived from the Abbey of Mondaye, in the dukedom of Normandy.
From the Old Norse, Mundi (abbrev. of names ending in mundr); from the German, Mund, Munder, Mundri; from the Dutch, Munne; a personal name.
Monday: may derive from Mondaye in Calvados, and not from the first day of the week.
In the beginning of the 17th century Andrew Mundy or Munday owned the manor of Nursling, which shortly passed out of the family by marriage (W.).
