From Mungall in the parish of Falkirk, Stirlingshire. William de Mongale del counte de Arne rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 210). Thomas de Mungale is in record between 1201—33 (Soltre, p. 14), and William of Munghale witnessed Elphinstone charters, c. 1340—41 (Elphinstone, I, p. 5; II, 221). Johannes Mungwale appears in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 313), Thomas of Moungwele was clerk to Huchone Fraser of the Louete in 1429 (Wemyss, II, p. 61), and John Mungalle, a Scot, received letters of denization in England in 1480 (Bain, IV, 1465). John Mungwel and Robert Mungale were witnesses in West Lothian 1485 and 1497 (Binns, 20, 25). Alexander Mongall was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1587 (NSCM., I, p. 80), James Mungall was a weaver in Edinburgh in 1622 (Edinb. Marr.), Robert Mungall is recorded in Dunnider in 1633 (SCM., III, p. 115), and James Mungall in Wester Lenhous in 1638 (Inquis., 2360). The surname also appears corruptly as Mungaw.
