Murchison is an Anglicised version of the name MacMurchaidh. It's a patronymic of the personal name Murchadh, meaning 'son of Murchadh'. Murchadh itself is a combination of muir, meaning 'sea', and cath, meaning 'battle'. The name translates to 'sea warrior'.

Often families would seek protection from, or alliance with, larger clans and would therefore become a sept of said larger clan. The Murchisons are a sept of three different clans - Buchanan, MacDonald, as well as MacKenzie. This is likely due to a nomadic lifestyle or the family being spread out. As such, someone with the last name Murchison may opt to wear a tartan of any of the three clans.
