A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

"A great name of old in Teviotdale," says Innes (p. 56), "now I suppose extinct." in early documents the name is Latinized de Campo muscarum, 'of the field of flies.' A family of this name, most probably of Norman origin, held the barony of Muschamp (somewhere in the north of England) in the latter end of the twelfth century. Sir Engram de Musseus (a misspelling) or de Muscens, a variant, appears as a witness c. 1215-45 (Bain, I, 1684, 1685). Although the de Muscamps appear in the Ragman Roll the name early died out-in the direct line it seems to have ended in co-heiresses, c. 1255. Stephen de Musc;.mp was the 'familiar' of William Fraser, bishop of St. Andrews in 1291 (Bain, II, 510). Robert de Muschance or Muscaumpe of the county of Edeneburk rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears an fight-rayed figure and S' Rob'ti d'Moscocarnp (ibid., II, p. 193,210, 546). Thomas de Muscampe of the county of Lanark also rendered homage for his lands in the same year (ibid., p. 206). Marjory, daughter and one of the co-heiresses of Sir Robert de Muscamp, was married tc Malisse or Maelissa, fifth earl of Stratheam, c. 1244-45, and was dead in 1255.
