From Montfiguet or Montfiquet in the department of Calvados, Normandy. In Scots Latin charters the name is rendered Monte Fixo. The first of the name in Scotland appears to have been William de Munfiehet (for Munfiehet) who witnessed a charter by Eschina, lady of Molle, wife of Walter the Steward, c. 1165-67 (RMP., p. 75). Richard de Munfiehet witnessed a charter by William the Lion confirming the earldom of Lennox to David, the king's brother, c. 1178-82 (LAC., p. 2), and about the year 1200 he witnessed the grant by the same king to the Abbey of Arbroath (RAA., I, p. 13). He is also witness to a Panmure charter a. 1214 (Panmure, II, 126). William de Munfiehet witnessed confirmation by Alexander II of the final accord between the abbot and convent of Holyrood and Ingeram de Balliol regarding the boundaries of Kircostintyn and Kirkebrid, 1228 (LSC., p. 69), and the same king's charter for sustentation of two chaplains in the church of the Castle of Rokesburg (REG., p, 146). He also appears as vicecomes de Perth, 1241 (Scon, p. 46). Hugh Muset, a merchant of the king of Scotland, had letters of protection in England, 1242-43 (Bain, I, 1607). William de Munificheth made a gift of lands of Leisington to Bernard de Kergylle in 1283 (Oliphants, p. 3). Richard Muschet and David Muschet of Angus rendered homage, 1296, and David de Moschet also appears on inquest at Perth, 1304 (Bain II, p. 207,211, 414). William de Monte Fvchet held Dundee for Edward II in 1312 (Charters and writs, Dundee, p. 4), and William de Montefixo, perhaps the same person, was one of the signers of the Scottish Declaration of Independence, 1320. The family failed in the direct line in middle of the fourteenth century, and John de Drummond, lord of Concrag, is said to have got Stobhall, Cargill, and Kincardine in Perth by marriage with the Munfichet heiress. George Muschate was heir of James Muschate of Bumebank, his father, 1546 (Retours, Perth, 1052). A family of Mushet possessed a considerable estate in Menteith. Mr. George Muschet was minister at Donyng, 1619 (Fordell, p. 112). Nicol Muschet of Boghall, who was hanged for the murder of his wife in the King's Park, Edinburgh, October, 1720, gave the surname an unenviable notoriety. The supposed site of the crime was long marked by "Muschet's Cairn." Muschett 1816.
