MUSSELBURGH: From the town of Musselburgh in the parish of Inveresk, Midlothian. John de Muskilburgh was official of Tevidalie, c. 1190-1220 (Soltre, p. 9), and Ranulph de Muskilburg witnessed a grant of the milltures of Preston to the Abbey of Kelso about the year 1200 (Kelso, 318). A later John de Muskylburg witnessed a charter by Malcolm de Moravia in favor of the Abbey of Dunfermline in 1274 (RD., 207). Magister Johannes de Muskylburg or Muxilburg was clericus de perbenda in 1278 (RD., p. 52, 53). John de Moskelburgh received payment of 10s. In 1304 for guiding the English leaders to the retreat of Sir Simon Fraser and other Scots in the expedition against Sir William Waleys in Lothian (Bain, IV, p. 475). Baudrikesland in the tenement of Dregeme (Dreghorn) was forfeited by William de Muskelburgh in 1336 (Bain, III, p. 335,381). Johannes Mussilburgh, doctor in sacred theology, was vicar general of Friars Preachers, 1459 (RAA., II, p. 110)."The dochtyr of Adam Mussilburchlg" held a land in Dunfermline in 1489 (DBR., 10), and in 1507 mention is made of the "land of the aims of wmquhill Madde Mussilburcht" (ibid., 351).
