The origin of the Mvere surname comes from an ancestor, who had lots of hair all over his body. It started as a nickname Chinemvere, meaning 'one with lots of body hair'. In time, the name was reduced to Mvere. Some offspring are occasionally seen with more hair than normal in black population. The common totem is Bonga Chihwa. Originally resided in Mutambara region in Eastern Zimbabwe South of Mutare. But now spread allover especially in the north Eastern region of Zimbabwe, i.e., Manicaland region.
