Surnames based on a parish is in a Danish context mostly seen with an ancestor originating from a specific parish, that took the parish as surname on top of the common patronym, or more correctly was given the extra surname by the army.

Since the most common names and patronyms the state church approved of prior to about a 100-150 years ago, only number about 25-30, then the army needed an added byname to each soldier to tell them apart, so adding the name of the parish the soldier was from, was a fast way of doing it.
