This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Nairn,' a burgh and county in Scotland. A Scottish surname. Nern, as a variant, seems to be confined to the United States.

1752. Baptised — Elizabeth, d. Edward Nairne: St. Michael, Cornhill.
Of local origin from the burgh of the same name. "A family of the name of 'Nairne' flits across the pages of the old chartulary of Moray between the town of Naim and a possession in Cromdale, but personal details are wanting" (Bain, Nairnshire: 2. ed., 1928, p. 169). The first Naim recorded appears to be Adam de Narryn who was chaplain of the alter of the Blessed Virgin at Inverness in 1361 (REM., p. 307). Michael de Name, armiger, witnessed a Perth charter in 1406 (RMS., I, 886). John of Nam, laird of Ardmuthach, and his son. Sir John of Nam, sheriff of Forres, appear in an Atholl charter of 1414 (Athole, p. 706). Alexander de Nam appears in Glasgow in 1440 (REG., 344), and another Alexander de Name of Sandfurde witnessed a Perthshire charter in 1450 (Oliphants, p. 10), and still another Alexander Name, a Scots messenger, received a gift in 1451 (Bain, IV, 1231). John of Nam served on an inquest in 1431 (Rose, p. 127), Robert Name was provost of Stirling in 1457 (SBR., p. 399), and Thomas Name, perhaps a relative, was a witness there in 1481 (Cambus., 212). Duncan Neorne, a follower of the earl of Mar, was charged with resetting outlawed Macgregors in 1636 (RPC., 2. ser. VI, p. 215). The family of Nairn, linoleum manufacturers, have been great benefactors of the town of Kirkcaldy. Charles Murray Nairne (1808-1882), born in Perth, was professor of moral philosophy and literature in Columbia University, New York. Naerne and Naern 1520.
