This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Eade' or 'Eede' (v. Edes, Eades, and Ede); nick. Nead, Need; gen. Needs, or Neads, or Needes; compare Neddy, Nibbs, Nopps, Nabbs, &c. Although I have no actual proof, I am confident that this is the derivation of the surname. Ede or Eade was one of the most popular fontnames in the hereditary surname period. My first two instances are strongly confirmatory of this view:

1678. Baptised — Mary, d. Richard Nede: St. James, Clerkenwell.

1681. Married — William Smith and Barbara Nedes: ibid.

1720. — Charles Smith and Rachael Needs: St. George's Chapel, Mayfair.

1717. Baptised — Susannah, d. William Need: St. James, Clerkenwell.
