A rare surname. 'Nephew' (from OF. neve with gen -s) has been suggested as the meaning, but it is, in Scotland, most probably a shortening of Balneaves, which see - de villa nativorum, 'the town of the serfs.' The father of Lord Neaves (1800-76) added the s to the family name of Neave.
