From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
NECHTAN: Gaelic Nechtan or Neachdan, from earlier Nectan or Necton, the OG. form of Pictish Naiton. The name comes from necht 'pure one' (from the root nig 'wash'), and seems to appear in the ogham inscription found at Lunnasting, Shetland, now in the National Museum of Antiquities, Edinburgh, as Nehhtonn. Nectan was the name of the king who expelled the Columban clergy 'across the ridge of Britain' because they refused to accept some of his reforms (Tighemach). 'Nectan escob Abberdeon' is one of the witnesses to a grant to the Abbey of Deer, 1132 (Bk. Deer, III, 6), and a later Nechten was rector of the church of Killinan, c. 1230 (RMP., p. 132).
