Neeson Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Anglicized forms of Macneish, which see. F. G. P. Neisson (d. 1876), statistical writer, was born in Kilmarnock. Neyssoune 1467.
Though at first sight this name appears to be English and though Woulfe suggests that it is the Scottish MacNee, it has been shown by the late Dr Seamus O'Ceallaigh and others to be in fact Irish Gaelic in origin. I have certainly found it in the Hearth Money Rolls (1659to 1665) of both Tyrone and Monaghan as an O name (O'Neason etc). Family tradition derives it from a variant of Mag Aonghusa (MacGennis) viz Mac Aonghusa, which however is often anglicized MacNeece. The change from Mac to O could have occurred through the tendency in Ulster to slur the prefix Mac and the influence of the spoken word on orthography. Presumably the reason Woulfe suggested Mac Niadh rather than Mac Neidhe, which he makes a Connacht sept (probably a branch of the Mulconrys) is that Neeson is found almost exclusively in north-east Ulster * and that Mac Neidhe in Connacht has not been anglicized as Neeson.
It is perhaps worth adding that Nason is a not uncommon surname in Co. Cork, where Neason occurs in marriage licence bonds in 1765 and 1777. I do not know the origin of Nason there. Neither Neeson nor Nason appears in any of the standard works on British surnames, which strengthens the belief that Neeson is an indigenous Irish name.
*In this connexion birth registration statistics for Neeson are interesting: in 1865 the figure was sixteen, all in Ulster, mainly in Counties Antrim, Down. Armagh and Monaghan; in 1890it was seventeen, also all in Ulster, chiefly in Co. Antrim.
? Mac Aonghusa which is usually anglicized MacNeece. Neeson occurs in both Tyrone and Monaghan seventeenth century records as O’Neason. SIF 119
