Nessel Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
From the German die Nessel, meaning 'nettle', a stinging plant.
The German idiom sich in die Nesseln setzen, 'to sit in nettles,' means to get in trouble. The neighbouring Dutch refers to a predicament as a 'nettle situation,' and the French say 'don't push grandma into the nettles' as a warning not to abuse a situation.
Nettles can be made into fabric, an easier but coarser alternative to cotton. During WWI the German army made their uniforms with nettles, and recently companies in Germany, Austria, and Italy have begun to sell nettle fabric.
Medicinally, nettles have been used for many ailments. In Austria, ingesting nettle tea or leaves is a traditional treatment for a multitude of problems, from the kidneys to the skin to the cardiovascular system, and many more.
All of these uses could indicate a name origin from a physician/herbalist, a textile maker, or simply a local trouble-maker.
