Hope) is common to place-names in North England, and in some instances has become -ship, as applied to surnames which owe their parentage to them. I have seen Blenkinsopp spelt Blenkinship; compare Winship. Nettleship is a Yorkshire name, and seems to have arisen in the neighbourhood of Tickhell, on the borders of Notts.
