Two parishes, one in the the Diocese of Carlisle and one in the the Diocese of Newcastle, and many little farmsteads, &c, go by this name; = new building; compare Lowland Scotch and North English big, to build; v. Halliwell There is also a township called Newbiggin in the parish of Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham; also a township in the parish of Shotley, Northumberland; also a township in North Riding of Yorkshire.
