From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A surname of territorial origin from one or more of the many farm-steadings so named. Eustace de Newbigging sold to the prior of Coldingham the freedom of William of Newbigging and Burunild (Brunhild) his wife, and Walter and Mabel their children and all their issue, for the sum of fifteen shillings (Raine, 341). The vill and lands of Newbigging in the parish of Camwath, Lanarkshire, passed into possession of the Somervilles through marriage with the daughter and heiress of Walter of Newbigging ajout middle of thirteenth century (Memorie of the Somervilles, I, p. 65). Alan de Neubigging was one of twelve knights appointed in 1249 to meet twelve from Eng land to settle the law of the marches (APS., I, p. 413). Michael de Neubigginge rendered account for John de Swyneburn in Cumberland, 1278 (Bainf ii, 143), and William de Neubiggyn, dominus ejusdem, was a witness in 1354 (Ke£so, p. 384). William of New bygging. lord of Dunsyar, had a charter of lands in the barony of Cultir from Walter Byset confirmed by David II in 1367 (RMS., I, 243,270). He derived his name from Newbigging in the parish of Camwath, Lanarkshire. William de Newbiging was a tenant of the earl of Douglas in the parish of Linton, 1376 (RHM., II, p. 16), and another William de Neubygyng witnessed a charter of lands of Quyltis, Aberdeen, 1387 (CAB., p. 274).
