This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Newland,' parishes in Worcestershire, and Gloucestershire; also townships in the parish of Ulverston, Lancashire, and of Drax, West Riding of Yorkshire (a) 'Of Newlands,' a township in the parish of Bywell St. Peter, Northumberland; also a chapelry in the parish of Crosthwaite, Cumberland But from my first instances it is manifest that the chief parentage must be allowed to land reclaimed from the great fen district.

There was an old barony of Newlands in the sheriffdom of Kincardine, and a parish of the name in Peeblesshire, from either of which the surname may have been derived. The name was common in Glasgow in the sixteenth century, and common in the parish of Dalswinton till recent times. Jasper Newlands of that Ilk in record, L469. Duncan Newlandis bailie of the burgh of Linlithgow, 1493 (Cambus., 186), Peter Newlandis, witness there in 1537 (Johnstoun), and Kentigem Newlandis, witness in 1542 (Anderson). Joneta Neulands was retoured heir in lands in the barony of Monkland, 1675 Retours, Lanark, 331). Robert Newlands, late glover, burgess of Edinbergh, 1726 (Guildry, p. 132).
