This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Newsham.' Townships in the parishes of Wressel, East Riding of Yorks; Kirby Wisk, North Riding of Yorkshire; Kirby Ravensworth, North Riding of Yorks; Kirkham, Lancashire; and Eaglescliffe, County Durham. Many of the surnames which owe their parentage to these places are mixed up with Newsam, which see. In the Index to the Register of St. George, Mayfair, the compiler has placed these names under one heading, as 'Newsham or Newsome.' In reality they ought to have been separated.
