Nikolaidou Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

A Greek surname; a male version is Nikolaidis. The ending, -idis, in Greek and Ancient Greek indicates genitive case and means 'the child of'. It is familiar with the endings: -ev and -ov in Slavic surnames and -son and -sen in Nordic and Saxon surnames.

In this case it means 'the child of Nikolaos', a male, Greek, Christian name, derived from niki, meaning 'victory' and laos, meaning 'people'. It literally means 'victory of people'. It is believed that Greek surnames (Konstantinidis, Ioannidis, Pantelidis etc) of this kind often derive originally by ancestors named as such, who gave the above surname to their children.

The origin of this surname (also a familiar ending is -adis, such as Grigoriadis) is from Pontus, a region located in Southern Black Sea, where large communities of Greeks lived since the era of Ancient Greece. Later on Greeks left their hometowns and inhabited either modern Greece or the USSR.
