This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Robert,' from nick. Hob, familiarly Nob. Names beginning with vowels or the aspirate h were commonly nicked with prefix N; compare Nab (Abel), Nib (Isabel), Numph (Humphry), Noll (Oliver); v. Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature, pp. 89, 90. Asregards the change from Nobbs to Nopps, compare Ropps for Robbs, Hopps for Hobbs, Hopkins for Hobkins, &c. To 'hob and nob,' to pledge a health by touching glasses. To 'hobnob,' to associate closely. Perhaps the explanation lies in the fact that both were recognized nicks, of the same name, Robert.
