Asregards the change from Nobbs to Nopps, compare Ropps for Robbs, Hopps for Hobbs, Hopkins for Hobkins, &c. To 'hob and nob,' to pledge a health by touching glasses. To 'hobnob,' to associate closely. Perhaps the explanation lies in the fact that both were recognized nicks, of the same name, Robert.
