This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Noel'(q.v). Alexander Nouelson, Northumberland, Pardons Roll, 6 Richard II. The surname evidently had a precarious existence. It might seem that Nolson was 'the son of Noll (i.e. Oliver), but I do not find traces of that nick, further back than the 17th century.
