A surname formerly in use in Orkney, from ON. Norraena, 'Norse' (language). It was apparently used as an alternative for Nory, which see. Stevin Norne in Woy (Voy) in Sandwick in 1601 (REO., p. 325). John Norie in Howbister in Orphir in 1612 reappears in 1627 as John Nome. The old family of Nome of Voy, Stromness, are more than once called Norie thus proving the identity of the names.
