Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

Why surnames should have been borrowed from points of the compass, is not very readily explained; yet they do exist-all in excellent associations, and at least two of them in the Peerage. The probability is that the original bearers received their appellatives from the fact of their having migrated to particular spots from particular directions; e.g. if a Cornishman settled in Kent, he might be called West, and if a Northumbrian took up his abode in Hampshire, North would perhaps become his distinctive epithet. See Points of the Compass.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Norreys or Norensis. The Lords North, Earls of Guilford, descend from the family of Norreys of Notts (ancestors of the N.s of Speke, Lancashire). Henry le N. was seized of estates in Notts, which on his death King John granted to Alan le N., his brother. They were probably sons of Robert Norensis, who held three fees in Hants 1165, whose ancestor, Richard de North, occurs 1103 (Mon. ii. 973). See Norris.

The Norman People (1874)

North was the name of a distinguished Leicestershire family of the 17th century. Several of the clerics of the county last century bore this name (N.). The Norths are also represented in Hants, Lincolnshire, and Oxfordshire.
