Nothard Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the neat-herd,' a tender of cattle; compare Coward, Oxnard, Shepherd, Calvert, the suffix of all of which is -herd. Middle English neet, Icel. naut, cattle. Every variety of form is found in Yorkshire records. I will simply quote the Poll Tax.

Johannes Nawtehird, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

Willelmus Nouthird, 1379: ibid.

Johannes Nedhard, 1379: ibid.

Johannes Nawtard, 1379: ibid.

Willelmus Netherd, 1379: ibid.

Cecilia Neawterd, 1379:.

Adam Netehird, 1379: ibid.

I cannot find any modern representatives of these forms, saving one Nothard in the London Directory. I doubt not the present dress is Nutter through an intermediate stage Nuttard or Nutterd. Then the final 'd' was dropped, and thus as Nutter this interesting surname still maintains a respectable appearance in our larger directories.
