Occup 'the nutman,' a dealer in nuts. Middle English note and nut, a nut. (a) Occup. 'the servant of Note' (Cnut or Canute); v. Nott (a). This is the more probable origin, belonging as it does to a special class of surnames, of which Matthewman and Addyman (which see) are the most familiar examples. Thus Matthewman means Matthew's man — servant, and Noteman means Note's manservant. Nevertheless (1) and (a) are open for selection.

A surname almost localized in East Lothian, and can there be traced back for four centuries or more. John Noteman is mentioned in 1297 as on the king of England's service in Scotland (Bain, II, 881).
