Occup 'the nutman,' a dealer in nuts. Middle English note and nut, a nut. (a) Occup. 'the servant of Note' (Cnut or Canute); v. Nott (a). This is the more probable origin, belonging as it does to a special class of surnames, of which Matthewman and Addyman (which see) are the most familiar examples. Thus Matthewman means Matthew's man — servant, and Noteman means Note's manservant. Nevertheless (1) and (a) are open for selection.
