From Gaelic Mac an fhucadair, 'son of the fuller (of cloth), ' Scots 'wauker. ' To judge from the innumerable forms of this name in the public records its proper spelling has been a puzzle for the scribes. In 1508 half of Auchintech Nethyr was leased for five years to John Makinnocater (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 266). Johannes McFuktor (without the article) and Elspet Innyfuktour (i. e. inghean fucadair, 'the fuller's daughter') are in record in Strathdee in 1527 (Grant, III, p. 70), and Donald roye Mdnocader witnessed an instrument of sasine of lands in Knapdale in 1547 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 139). Donald M'Ynnocater appears in Balloch in 1560 (BBT., p. 203), John McInhugater in Airochmore, Stirling, in 1592, and Patrick Mclnhuggutir in Glenleidnoch in 1602 (RPC., XIV, p. 396). John Mcincutour was tenant of Cunningham of Drumquhassil in Lennox in 1602, ai Margaret Nicuncater, tenant in Kilbride, Lennox in 1610. Ewne or Ewin Mclnnugatour in Ballinacall (or Ballimakill), Donald McMungatour or M'Mugatour, and John McMigatour in Coull of Balquhidder, Patrick McMuckater in Balledmont, and Donald McInmugatour in Ballichandie were fined in 1613 and 1614 for reset of members of the outlawed Clan Gregor (RPC., XIV, p. 630,637, 638,656, 661; X, p. 122; IX, p. 228,483). John Dow McInnow Catter or McNucatter in Carnakalliche was one of a number charged with spoliation of a ship called The Providence of Dumbarton in 1629 (ibid., 2. ser. II, p. 341; III, p. 45, 46). Patrick and William McMuncatter, in Mortlach, followers of Alastair Cumming of Pettiwaich, were charged in 1642 with carrying prohibited weapons (RPC., 2. ser. VII, p. 286). Donald Roy M'Nugattar is in record in Dadin, parish of Comrie, in 1653 (Dunblane), and Donald M'Nawcater in Toweruthan, parish of Muthill, about the same period (ibid. ). Patrick McNowcatter was procurator-fiscal of Argyll in 1665 and Martine McNaucater, who held the same office in 1667, is perhaps the Martin McNucater who was sheriff-officer in 1649 (RPC., 3. ser. II, p. 116,346; Genealogist, II. s. XXXV, p. 42). John M'Enugator was in the hands of a doctor in 1666 (Strathendrick, p. 107). Donald McNowcater was servitor of John Yuill in Inveraray in 1659 (Genealogist, n. s.; XXXV, p. 230), another Donald M'Inugator was resiaent in Dallogane, parish of Balquhidder, in 1677 and a third Donald Mcinucter in Bellivillinvege, witnessed an instrument of sasine in 1679 (Dunblane; Laing, 2787). John M'Noucater in Auchavyll, parish of Glasrie, appears in record in 1684, and in 1694 Maolmorrie M'Innuccater in Kilislet, parish of Kilberry (Argyll Inv. ). In the Register of Testaments of Argyll, 1674-1800, we have John M'Nuccater in Auchadamillan, who died in May, 1693; Katharine N'Nuccatri in Stronchurmore, 1695; Margaret N'Nuccater in Bargaragane, parish of Kelislet, in 1698. Some Macuchkaders were followers of the Stewarts of Appin in the '45 (Coll., p. 199). McKnockiter is an uncommon Moray form of the name, and the Nucators of Dundee are descended from a MacNucator (1830). The name also occurs in record without the 'Mac'. Finlay Fuccatour appears in Strowane in 1601 (Dunblane), and in 1614 Gibboun Fugatour in Ferlingbrek, Dumbarton, was fined twenty marks for reset of outlawed members of the Clan Gregor (RPC., X, p. 225). The name is now Englished Walker, and doubtless most of our Highland Walkers were originally Mac an fhucadairs. McInukidar 1692.
