Nyhan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Niatháin On record in Co. Cork since 1295. SIF 120
Other forms of this name still occasionally found are Nihan and Nihane; while Nahane and Nechane are in the lists of Linen Board premiums for 1896 for the parish of Ballymoney, The influence of the usual anglicized spelling has resulted in it being now generally pronounced Nye-han; but only a generation ago it was always Nee-haan (Neehane) in its native homeland, viz south-west Cork, so that the Irish form Ó Niatháin, given by Woulfe, is probably correct, though his conjectural identification of it with Ó Niadh and Ó Niadhóg seems far-fetched. He says he found no early instances, but in fact it occurs twice in the Justiciary Rolls for Co. Cork as early as 1295 when Neivin O'Nyhyn was charged with “harbouring felons” and soon after a William O'Nyhyn appeared in another law case.
