OBERVILLE: John de Oberville was on assize of merches in Fife, 1230, and as John de Obiruil he witnessed a gift of 10s. annually to the monks of Dunfermline by Gilbert de Cles (RD., p. 108,111). In 1291 William de Obervill granted to the abbot and convent of Dunfermline permission to work one coalpit on any part of his property except arable ground, and when one was exhausted to open another (ibid., p. 218). As William Doberville del counte de Fyfe he rendered homage in 1296 (Blair, II, p. 204). From one or other of the half-dozen places in Normandy named Auberville. In Domesday Book the name appears as Odburvill and Oburvilla.
