From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

ODRAN, Odhban: Diminutive of odhar, 'dun coloured, sallow.' Skene suggested (PSAS., IV, p. 318) that Adrian, an Irish missionary who arrived in Pictland about the time of the accession of Kenneth Macalpin, was really named Odran, "as the name of the patron saint always enters largely into those of the clergy of the place with the usual prefix of Gilla or Maol; and we find a subsequent bishop of St. Andrews called Macgilla Odran, son of the servant of Odran." A Saint Odran is mentioned in an old life of St. Columba, and tradition has it that he was the first person to be buried in Iona, in Reilig Orain (Reilic Odhrain). He is also commemorated in Cladh Odhrain in Tiree, in Kiloran in Colonsay, and elsewhere. A Mailodranus is mentioned by Adamnan (VC., I, 20).
