Oghia Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

This last name is Armenian.

My great-grandfather, Michel Oghia, was the lone survivor of the Armenian Genocide in his family. His father, sister Shafika, and two brothers did not survive.

He survived because he was attending school in Cairo. He then remained in Cairo, became an Egyptian citizen, and shortened the family name to sound more Arab. Later, my grandfather (Edmond Oghia) and his brothers shortened the name again to it's present state, Oghia. The n in ian (like most Armenian last names) was dropped, and the last part of the name, Oghia is what became the new family name. Originally, the last name started with a Y, went on for several letters, and ended in Oghian.

Michel Oghia was Syrian-Armenian. The family is Catholic; originally Orthodox Catholic, but now Roman Catholic.
