Of territorial origin from the barony of Ogilvie in the parish of Glamis in Angus. Gilbert, son of Gillebride, first earl of Angus, and younger brother of Gilcrist, third earl of Angus, obtained a charter between 1172-77 of the lands of Purin Ogguluin, and Kynmethan (Douglas, III, 349). This charter exists only in a transumpt made in 1577, as the original was then "werray auld, warne and consumit, and skantlie may be weill red." This Gilbert is also witness to a grant by his brother Gilchrist of the church of Moryfode to the Abbey of Aberbrothok between 1201-4 (RAA., I, 29). He also, as Oggelville and Eggilvyn, took the oath of fealty in 1296. Ogilvin [the first element maybe theictish cognate of Welsh uchel, high; and (if the physiography of the place bears it out) the second element may represent a mutated form of Welsh bàn = Gaelic beinn, a peak: but further early forms are desirable] The third son [of Gilibride, Earl of Angus, temp. David I.] Gilbert assumed the surname of Ogilvy from lands so called in his possession, of which, with Powrie and Kyneithein in Angus, he had a charter in 1172.—Burke’s Peerage, &c., sub nomine ‘Airlie’.
(Scottish) One who came from the barony of Ogilvie (high hill), in the parish of Glamis, in Angus.
The extinct peerage family (from whom springs the existing baronet), rose to eminence in the twelfth century, and derived their surname from the lordship of Oggil, co. Northumberland; but Ogle appears also to be an Anglo-Saxon or Danish personal name, as it occurs, in composition with topographical expressions, in several family names, as Ogilvie, Ogilwy, Ogilby, and Oglesby, the residence of Ogle; Oglethorpe, the village of Ogle, &c.
Local: from the Barony of Ogilvy in Forfarshire. The family are descended from Gilbert, brother of Gilchrist, Earl of Angus, who obtained from William the Lion a grant of the Barony of Ogilvy.
Local: from the Ogle Castle in Northumberland. The family are descended from Robert Ogle of Ogle, temp. Edward III.
OGILVIE: Local. From the lands of Ogilvie, in Scotland. It may come from the Welsh Ochil, a high place.
