Of local origin from the place named Ogle in Northumberland. Robert de Ogle before his death in 1362 held half the barony of the Hospital in Northumberland (Bain, IV, 73). Henry de Ogle witnessed a charter of lands in Fife, 1395 (Wemyss, II, 33), and Patrick Ogyll witnessed a papal dispensation by the bishop of Dunblane in 1422 (Hay, 10). Alexander de Ogil de Popil was one of an assize on the lands of Gladmor, 1430 (James II, 16), and Patrick Ogyl (Ogyll or Ogill) held a tenement in Haddington in 1458 and was witness there in same year (Neubotle, p. 244,246-248). John Ogyll witnessed an instrument of sasine in favor of Adam Crechtoun of Ruchtven (Ruthven) in 1501 (Bamff, p. 39), the seal of Patrick Ogil is appended to a retour of 1538 (Seals Supp., 787), William Ogill was a witness in Argyll, 1563 (HP. II, p. 206), payment was made to William Ogill, writer in chancery, in 1561 (ER., XIX, p. 136), and Henry Ogle is recorded at Hirsell in 1727 (Lauder).
