Oglvey Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

OGILVIE, Ogilvy: Of territorial origin from the barony of Ogilvie in the parish of Glamis in Angus. Gilbert, son of Gillebride, first earl of Angus, and younger brother of Gilcrist, third earl of Angus, obtained a charter between 1172-77 of the lands of Purin Ogguluin, and Kynmethan (Douglas, III, 349). This charter exists only in a transumpt made in 1577, as the original was then "werray auld, warne and consumit, and skantlie may be weill red." This Gilbert is also witness to a grant by his brother Gilchrist of the church of Moryfode to the Abbey of Aberbrothok between 1201-4 (RAA., I, 29). Alexander de Oggoluin had a charter of the lands of Bela it and others before 1232 (SHSM., IV, p. 315). Patrick de Oggiluill occurs as witness to a mortification by Roger de Quincy, earl of Winchester, Constable of Scotland, of the church of Losrech (Lathrisk) to the Priory of St. Andrews about 1267 (RPSA., p. 337). He also, as Oggelville and Eggilvyn, took the oath of fealty in 1296. His seal bears a dog at foot of tree, between 2 cinquefoils, and S' Patricii de Oggilvile (Bain, II, p. 195,550) Walter de Ogilby was appointed High Treasurer of Scotland in 1425, and about the same date Patrick de Ogilby was Justiciar of Scotland benorth the Forth (The Lennox, II, 62). David of Ogilby was hostage for the king of Scotland in 1425 and Thomas of Oglevy of Clova had a safe conduct in 1466 (Bain, IV, 981,983, 1366). A long-standing feud between the Campbells and the Ogilvies culminated in 1645 when the latter had their revenge for the burning of "The Bonnie House of Airlie" by setting fire to Castle Campbell near Dollar. An old rhyme referring to some Ogilvie of the past runs:

"Ugly you lived, and Ugly you the,Stolen from Fore-bears

And now in an ugly place you lie."

"Ugly" here, of course, is a pun on the surname. Old forms of the name in addition to those already noted are: Ogelbe 1531, Ogglebie 1665, Ogiluy 1501, Ogillwe 1533, Ogiluill 1250, Ogilwe 1533, Ogilwill 1348, Ogilwye 1685, Ogilvile 1425, Ogilvo 1516, Ogliwy 1545, Oglevie 1661, Ogvlui and Ogylvi 1483, Ogyluy 1526, Ogyluyll 1359, Ogylvil 1425, Ogylvy 1452, Ogyllwe 1534, Ogylwe 1492, Ogylwy 1509, Ogylwye 1456, and among the Scots Guards in the service of France it appeared as Ohilby. Other forms (undated) are Ogelvy, Ogiilvy, Ogilbe Ogilbie, Ogilvi, Ogilwie, Ogivlle, Ogylbe, Ongelby.
