Ojurović Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Ojurović is a Croatian surname of distant Ottoman (Turkish) origin. It was most likely created during the late 17th century after the Ottoman rule in Croatia (Lika i Krbava specifically) ended. It probably comes from the Turkish word 'oyur' which translates to 'voting' or 'to vote'. The suffix 'ović' is very common in Slavic surnames and it was probably added to 'Oyur' during the Christianization of this Turkish/Ottoman individual (or family) in the late 17th century. It's hard to tell if this surname truly comes from a Turkish person or family who stayed in Lika after the area had been liberated or if it comes from a Slavic/Croatian individual or family who had been named 'Oyur' by the Ottomans for whatever reason. This was very common practice by the Turks. They would often give Croatians, Bosnians and Serbs Turkish sounding surnames based on their profession, physical appearance etc.

For example, if you were a Croatian doctor in the 16-17th century, Turks would most likely have called you 'hećim' which means doctor or healer. This is how the Croatian and Bosnian surname 'Hećimović' came to be. People with this surname today might not even have any Turkish ancestry.

Either way, people with the surname 'Ojurović' today are regular Croatian people who have very little to no Turkish ancestry (0.1% - 1%). This surname is after all at least 9 or 10 generations old. Any Turkish admixture in people with this surname is so diluted by this point that it's most likely completely insignificant.

Ojurović is a Croatian surname. It first appears in Austrian (Habsburg) church records in late 1600s. There is evidence in old church records that this name originates from a native Croatian family or individual who at some point in the 16th-17th century decided to convert to Islam during the Ottoman conquests of southeastern and central Europe. This was quite common in occupied European lands. This same family later converted back to Catholicism after the final victory against the Ottoman Empire in Austria-Hungary (1690s.)

The meaning of this surname is 'son of Juro', 'son of Jurica', or 'son of Jure'.
