Oldershaw Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the alder-shaw'( v. Shaw), more correctly the 'aller-shaw,' the d being intrusive. Allern is adjectival, as in Linden, Beechen, Birken, Oaken. Thus Ollernshaw is the nearest to a correct form, wanting a change in the initial vowel only. I believe the spot 'Ollerenshaw' is in the parish of Taxal, Derbyshire, close by Shallcross Hall, which has made Shawcross and Shallcross so familiar a surname in that district. The Rev. M. Ollerenshaw was minister of Mellor, Derbyshire (adjacent), in 1810 (v. East Cheshire); compare Ellershaw, the North-English equivalent. The following entries occur in the neighbouring church of Prestbury:

1632. Buried — George Owlrenshaw and John Owlrenshaw, twines: Reg. Prestbury.

1633. — Ellen Oulrenshawe: ibid.

1634. Baptised — Anne Owlrenshawe: ibid.
