This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the old royd,' from residence therein (v. Royd). Possibly Holroyd (which see) is the same. In the Register of the University of Oxford., I find Oldesworth, Holdsworth, Holsworth, and Ouldsworth, a parallel instance. Of course the signification may be 'the royd of Old,' the personal name of the original settler or owner (v. Old and Ould). One thing is certain, the surname arises in Yorkshire, probably the West Riding; v. Holroyd.
