The ON. form of the name was either Hamundr ('high gift') or Amund, Amundi being an old personal name among the Norsemen. In Orkney records we have Edduard Homondsone of Onston (1546), Edward Omand or Omandson (1576), and in 1605 Rychert Ewmendsone (REO., p. 138,178,211, 233). Robert Omond was resident in Kirkwall, 1647 (Inquis., 3237). Thome Omond or Omound appears in Kirkbuster, 1530, and Richard Eumound in Cloustoun, 1602 (OSR., I, p. 256,272).
