Onion Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Enion,' a favourite personal name in old Welsh records. The modern directories abound with variants, &c. (v. Benyon, Pinnion, &c). Mr. Lower says, 'In the register of East Grinstead, Sussex, in the first half of the 17th century, the name is written indifferently Ennion and Onion.' This quite tallies with my own observations.

1661. William Davies and Ann Onyon: Marriage Lic. (London).

1720. Married — Abraham Taylor and Margaret Onion: St. Dionis Backchurch.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

(Celtic) for Enion, q.v. (English) occasionally conf. with Unwin, q.v.

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

Sometimes a corruption of Unwyn, but oftener of the Welsh personal name Enion. In the register of East Grinstead, Sussex, in the first half of the XVII. century, the name is written indifferently Ennion and Onion. Benion, Bunyan, and Pinyon are also corruptions of this fine old Cambro-British designation. The force of corruption could hardly go further than this twisting of a personal appellative, not only into a graveolent vegetable, but into that which either impedes the traveller in his walk, or gives the power of flight to an eagle! See Bunyan and Pinion.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

A corruption of Unwyn or Onwhyn; from unwinn, unconquerable. Lower thinks it is oftener from the Welsh personal name Enion. Onwen is the name of a manumitted serf, Cod. Dip. No. 971; and Unwona that of a bishop of Leicester.

Ludus Patronymicus (1868) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Onions is probably another form of Inions, also a Shropshire name and above referred to. It is, however, probable that away from the Welsh border this name, as Lower suggests, may be a corruption of Unwin or Onwen, an old personal name, which was represented in Cambridgeshire and elsewhere in the 13th century by the surnames of Onwinne and Onoiun (H. R.).
