Maybe from the Anglo-Saxon pers. name Oppa with the English diminutive suff. -ie, -e)y] but the name seems to be confined to Cornwall, where (acc. to Lower) it occurs in the 15th cent. as Opye, and, later, Oppie.
See ms indigenous to Cornwall. Opye occurs there in the XV. cent. and Oppie at a later date.
Opie, or Oppy, is an old Cornish name, the first having its present home in the neighbourhood of Redruth, and the latter in Perranarworthal. John Opie, the great historic painter, was a St. Agnes man; he was born there in 1761, and his mother died there in 1805 at the age of 94 (P.). Opye was the form of the name in the 15th century, and Oppie at a later date. Opy was a name well known in Bodmin during the 16th and 17th centuries, when several mayors bore the name (M.). Richard Opie was mayor of Plymouth in 1699 (Worth's "Plymouth").
