From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is of twofold origin:

(1) from Ord (Orde or Horde), later Kirkurd in Peeblesshire, (2) from the lands of Ord in Banffshire. Adam of Horde of the county of Peebles rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 197,207). John Urd was tenant in Spotswood in 1731 and William Ourd, tenant in Ligertwood in 1741 (Lauder). Andrew de Ord had the lands of Ord in the parish of Banff from Robert I in the 21st year of the king's reign. Alexander Ord of that Ilk and Walter Ord in Banff wrongfully raised letters against Walter Currour of Inchedrour and others in 1596 (RPC., V). James Ord, wigmaker in Cullen, was a Jacobite of the '45. The surname is now comparatively rare in Banffshire, but appeared in Cullen at end of seventeenth century (SN&Q., I, p. 201). The old family of the name exchanged the lands of Ord for Finachty c. 1590 (ibid.). Laurence Ord was a merchant burgess burgo Vidcanonicorum, Edinburgh, 1696 (Inquis., 7677).
