This surname is of twofold origin:
(1) from Ord (Orde or Horde), later Kirkurd in Peeblesshire, (2) from the lands of Ord in Banffshire. Adam of Horde of the county of Peebles rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 197,207). John Urd was tenant in Spotswood in 1731 and William Ourd, tenant in Ligertwood in 1741 (Lauder). Andrew de Ord had the lands of Ord in the parish of Banff from Robert I in the 21st year of the king's reign. Alexander Ord of that Ilk and Walter Ord in Banff wrongfully raised letters against Walter Currour of Inchedrour and others in 1596 (RPC., V). James Ord, wigmaker in Cullen, was a Jacobite of the '45. The surname is now comparatively rare in Banffshire, but appeared in Cullen at end of seventeenth century (SN&Q., I, p. 201). The old family of the name exchanged the lands of Ord for Finachty c. 1590 (ibid.). Laurence Ord was a merchant burgess burgo Vidcanonicorum, Edinburgh, 1696 (Inquis., 7677).
(English) 1 Dweller at a Point or Head-land [Old English ord, a point; spear] Ord, Northumb., was Orde in the 13th cent.
‘In Suffolk a promontory is called an ord.’—Halliwell, p. 590.

An ancient personal name. It was borne by a Somersetshire landowner before the making of Domesday. The family of Orde are of considerable antiquity, and have long held lands in the counties of Northumberland and Durham, formerly as tenants in capite under the Bishop. The first mentioned in the pedigree, is Simon de East Orde, who possessed Orde by the tenure alluded to in 1362. The estate is at Newbiggin, co. Northumberland.
Point, edge.
Ord: The Ords have been counected with Northumberland for ages. The Ordes of Orde were lords of the township of Orde as far back as the 12th century; from this main stock there branched off the Ords of Newbiggin in the 15th century, the Ords of Longridge in the 16th century, the Ords of Grindon in the 17th century, and. the Ords of Holy Island in the 17th and 18th centuries (R.). The Ords of Grindon are still represented in that locality.
