This surname is derived from an occupation. 'a keeper of an hostelry'; v. Oastler.
The "hostler" or "ostler" is the man who takes, or perhaps we should now say took, charge of the horses at an inn, but originally the word meant the inn-keeper himself (OF. hosteller). The first form laere given is common in Fife. William Ostler or Ostillar was a burgess of Forres in 1430 (RMS., II, 177,179). Andrew Hostalar, member of an inquest at Nam in 1431 (Rose, p. 127) is probably the Andrew Hostiller in Forres mentioned in 1441 (SCM., V, p. 20), and the Andrew Ostillar who had seizin in the lands of Kynowdie in 1449 (Cawdor, p. 15). Hugh Hostelar was tenant of the land of Rucht in 1456 (RAA., II, 106), and Robert Hoistlair was servitor of Lord Ruthven in 1561 (CMN., 82). Andrew Oistlar, reidare at Rothymercus, 1574 (RMR.). Ostlar 1552. Ostlere in Kirkcaldy, 1941.
